Villa le Maschere, a luxury resort among nature, art and history, a few kilometers from Florence - Tuscany
Twenty two masks carved from local pietra serena stone, some classical and some grotesque, decorate the facade of Villa Le Maschere, one of the most beautiful late Renaissance country homes in Tuscany. Pleasantly situated in the hills of the Mugello near the Bilancino Lake, Villa Le Maschere was the subject of a 5 year-long restoration and has been reborn as a 5-star resort. Le Maschere is a place of great historical and architectural value, but with its special emphasis on contemporary interior design it is also a superb expression of the world-famous ‘Made in Italy’.
Past and present, tradition and innovation, characterise the villa’s strong personality. Perrywinkle-violet coloured fittings, a colour much loved by the lords and ladies of the eighteenth century, venetian style floors, glass and gold leaf tiles, stone pastes of coloured cement and majolica inspired by the early twentieth century, all fuse harmoniously in the Villa’s contemporary interiors.
The Mugello valley near Florence is the perfect place for a holiday in authentic Tuscany in pursuit of culture and art, beautiful countryside, and great food and wine. Mugello lies between hills and the Apennine mountains, and is characterised by vineyards and fruit farms. At its centre lies the Bilancino Lake.

The dominant motifs of this restaurant are the green of the fabric, the prints and the floral designs in the great lamps, which re-evoke the romantic park surrounding the Villa. Built in the second half of the sixteenth century by the Bettini family, Villa Le Maschere was later acquired by the Florentine Gerini family, who began to enlarge and restructure the house, and to reorganise the park with new avenues and an Italian style garden. At the end of the seventeenth century the villa was remodelled by Giovanni Battista Foggini, chief architect and sculptor to the court of the Grandduke of Tuscany Cosimo III de’ Medici. Foggini’s most famous works include statues at the churches of the Carmine and Santissima Annunziata in Florence, but he was also responsible for renovations at many Florentine palaces including the grand staircase at Palazzo Medici-Riccardi.
By the 18th and 19th centuries Villa Le Maschere was considered one of the most beautiful Tuscan villas. Le Maschere was a favourite stop for popes (Pius IX in 1857), sovereigns (Carlo Emanuele IV King of Sardinia in 1801, King Carlo Felice in 1821), as well as many renowned noblemen and artists.
