The Chapel

Just a few metres from the hotel complex, in the heart of the Tuscan valleys, there is an ancient Christian church which was originally constructed on a site reserved for the worship of the pagan goddess Igea, protector of health. The church is known as Santa Maria ad Balneo, and dates back to 1000 AD. Ever since its completion it has been used as a chapel by the pilgrims who, following the Via Francigena, would stop at San Casciano to rest and recuperate lost energy at the Baths. A little architectural gem, the altar retains its raised structure, ideal for performing simple and exclusive ceremonies.  Alongside the chapel is an ancient ruin which will soon be restored and used as a hall for banquets and receptions.
